Update May 2017

Well it has been a bit of time since I have updated this blog.  Since Oct last years we did our normal traveling in the fall and then spent most of the winter working on Elden AM74-5 and 73-39 and Am73-79

Elden 74-5 was found to have mismatched front uprights.  One was 1/2 ” taller offsetting the hub center line.  Borrowed 2 different ones from our last acquisition and began a search for new replacements.  Was introduced to 2 potential suppliers in the UK. One private individual and another a race shop:

https://www.mk8motorsport.com/

I also spoke to Pat Prince at Pat Prince  Engineering and he has the jigs for the suspension parts.  So soon I will be sending the stuff I need to Pat for repair or fabrication.

We are now running the new Hoosier VFF treaded tires a bit difference that the slicks I have run for years.  But we are nearing an optimum setup.

Elden #2 was nearing completion for this racing season.  Note I am doing preservation not restorations so I don’t strip down the car. When I picked up the car there was an invoice to “straighten the frame”.  Well it is still “bent”.  I couldn’t align the car, ran strings down the chassis found the rear sub frame tweaked 1/2″ at least.  So work has stopped.

Elden #3 AM-73-79 is getting a new body.  The old body had been cutup and missing some parts so I ordered a new body from:

http://www.marchantandcox.co.uk/m-and-c-moulds

New body

Hoping that body is here in June.  So the plan right now is to strip the bent chassis down for repair and to move forward on Elden AM 73-79.

Racing highlights:  We ran ran Elden 74-5 the MK10C rebodied Falconer and the video link is:

Well we will catch up again after the SVRA Open Wheel World Challenge at Indianapolis,  in June.

72 Elden MK8 First Competition Outing

MK8 at farmington Oct15Last weekend we took the Elden MK 8 out to a solo event in Farmington, NM. 15 acres of good asphalt a great place for this cars initial competition outing in over 20 years.

Car worked well, lots of power from this engine. In fact had trouble keeping the rear wheels from spinning in the lower 3 gears. Geared low for Solo but, wow. This engine is 0.100 overbore, Omega pistons and a cam. Not FF legal but what came in the car.

Issues: rear brakes, top end breathing of the engine, ride height needs to go up 1/2 all the way around. Was running toe-out on front and rear +1/32″ total, -1 deg camber front and -0.5 rear and 3 deg castor front. Tires were some 3 year old American Racers.

So anyway back to the shop and await the arrival of Elden #4. More on that later.

72 Elden MK8 #24 Ready for it first outing

Elden MK 8 DebutIts been a bit of work. The MK8 was to follow the MK10 therefore got the left over time. For the last month tried to get it ready for a paddock run. This weekend will take her out for paddock lapping for general systems check out. Still needs front shocks, rebuilt ones in process, using an old set of SPAX for now. I need to figure out how to bend a rear sway bar as this car doesn’t have one. But for now she has been washed, and loaded into the trailer. Watch for video next week of the paddock debut

Update on MK10 and MK8

All engine parts are at the machine shop (Santa Fe Auto Machine) her in Santa Fe, NM I have the MK10 and the MK8 engine in the shop so allot of parts to order and manage.

When the shop gets done we will complete the order for bearings and rings, etc. Shopping around between BAT and Pegasus finds a large variance in costs. I keep a spreadsheet of all current prices for “ALL” parts I have used. If you want a copy of the list send me an e-mail.

Trying a new firm for RaceTech guages. Ben at Transatlantic Raceparts, Ltd internet site is: http://www.race-parts.com. They were recommended by RACETECH in England as a source of the gauges for the MK 8. Using a dual oil pressure/oil temp gauge and a electrical water temp gauge. Give them a try.

So back to cleaning parts and working on the MK 8 brakes.

Update on MK8(10)

Good Morning

The foot box on the MK8(10) has some surface rust on it.  So removed the pedal assembly, master cylinders etc. Put the assembly in the glass bead blast cabinet and cleaned up all surfaces awaiting new paint or powder coating, haven’t decided yet. The dead pedal was broken off so fabricated a new one and welded on.

Began rebuilding the master cylinders.  I am used to having Girling 0.75″ rear brake and 0.625″ front brake masters but this car is 0.70″ and 0.625 .  Just an observation.  Was able to rebuild the masters with a light hone job and new Girling repair kits.

Rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder and reinstalled.

Today finish the master cylinders, paint the pedal assembly and return to the completion of the battery cover on the MK10

Two Elden MK 10’s Restoration/Preservation

This blog will start with the following of a Restoration/Preservation and subsequent Vintage Racing of a 1973 and 1974 Elden Mk 10 Formula Fords.

Other blogs maybe started on other projects: 1972 Royale RP16 Vintage Formula Ford, 1954 SIAM H-Mod and other projects as they come to the shop.

The two Elden Formula Fords were acquired in Pickens South Carolina from the Al Morris.  The family had raced these two cars and others in various SVRA, and HSR events. Both cars were acquired and moved into my shop in Santa Fe, NM in October 2011.

First is a 1974 Elden Mk10C,  Frame # AM 74 5.  History has this car racing in SCCA from 1974-mid 1980’s and SVRA in the 1990’s.  Recorded owners were Robert Cavanaugh (8/74),Everett Kemp (4/1975), Mark Quinn (3/1976), Lee Stohr (5/1980), Al Morris (5/1991).

1974 Elden MK10C Re-bodied Falconer

Second car is an Elden MK10,  Frame # 73  39. History has this car racing in SCCA from 1973-1991.  Recorded owners were Roy Hepner (8/1973), Art Cross (4/1977), Gary Bridge (6/1991), Al Morris (7/1992).  This car was registered in SCCA log books and subsequent SVRA and HSR as a 1973 Elden MK 8.  But discussions with Peter Hampsheir and comparing the frame number with Peter, this car is a MK10.  So I will follow this cars a 1973 MK 8(10).
